Understanding the Complete Formula
The PVP damage formula in Where Winds Meet is complex but logical. This guide breaks down every single component, explains how they interact, and shows you advanced mechanics that most players miss.
Building on our basic damage guide, this is the deep dive for players who want complete mastery.
The Complete Formula
Final Damage = ((Base Weapon Damage + Flat Damage Bonuses) × (1 + Attack/1000) × (1 + Damage% Bonuses) × Skill Multiplier × Element Multiplier) × Crit Multiplier × (1 - Defense Reduction) × (1 - Damage Reduction) × (1 + Penetration Bonus) × Class ModifierThis is the COMPLETE formula including all hidden modifiers. Let's break down each component.
Component Breakdown
1. Base Damage Calculation
Base = (Weapon Damage + Flat Bonuses) × (1 + Attack/1000)Your foundation damage comes from weapon plus any flat damage bonuses from gear, then multiplied by your Attack stat.
- • Weapon Damage: Your weapon's base attack value
- • Flat Bonuses: +50 damage from accessories, etc.
- • Attack Scaling: Every 1000 Attack doubles this value
2. Percentage Damage Bonuses
× (1 + Sum of All Damage% Bonuses)All percentage damage increases are additive with each other, then multiply your base.
- • Martial Arts bonuses: +15% damage
- • Set bonuses: +10% damage
- • Buff effects: +20% damage
- • Total: (1 + 0.15 + 0.10 + 0.20) = 1.45× multiplier
3. Skill Multiplier
× (Skill Damage% / 100)Each skill has its own damage multiplier. This is why some skills hit harder than others.
- • Basic attacks: 100-150%
- • Medium skills: 200-300%
- • Ultimate skills: 400-600%
4. Element Multiplier (Hidden)
× Element Bonus (1.0 to 1.3)Element advantages give hidden damage bonuses. Most players don't know this exists!
- • Neutral: 1.0× (no bonus)
- • Advantage: 1.15× (+15% damage)
- • Strong Advantage: 1.3× (+30% damage)
5. Critical Multiplier
× (Crit Damage% / 100) if crit, × 1.0 if notOn critical hits, multiply by your Crit Damage stat. Base is 150%, can go up to 300%+.
See Attack vs Crit guide for optimization
6. Defense Reduction
× (1 - Enemy Defense / (Enemy Defense + 1000))Enemy defense reduces your damage. This is the biggest damage loss in PVP.
- • 1000 Defense: 50% reduction
- • 2000 Defense: 66.7% reduction
- • 3000 Defense: 75% reduction
7. Damage Reduction
× (1 - Enemy Damage Reduction%)Separate from defense, enemies can have flat damage reduction from buffs/armor.
- • Armor sets: 5-15% reduction
- • Buff skills: 10-30% reduction
- • These stack additively
8. Penetration Bonus
× (1 + Penetration / (Penetration + 2000))Your penetration stat partially negates enemy defense. Diminishing returns after 1000.
9. Class Modifier (Hidden)
× Class Multiplier (0.95 to 1.05)Each weapon class has a hidden damage modifier. This is why some builds feel stronger.
- • Sword: 1.0× (baseline)
- • Spear: 1.05× (+5% damage)
- • Umbrella: 0.95× (-5% damage, but has other benefits)
Advanced Interactions
Multiplicative vs Additive Bonuses
Understanding which bonuses multiply vs add is crucial for optimization.
Additive (stack together first):
- • All Damage% bonuses
- • All Damage Reduction%
Multiplicative (multiply separately):
- • Attack scaling
- • Crit Damage
- • Defense reduction
- • Skill multipliers
Order of Operations Matters
The formula calculates in a specific order. Changing the order would give different results.
This is why Attack buffs are better than Damage% buffs at high Attack values - they multiply earlier in the formula.
